Understanding the Ceremony
Sikh Traditions & Etiquette
The Anand Karaj
“Anand Karaj” translates to “Ceremony of Bliss” in Punjabi. It is the traditional Sikh wedding ceremony that takes place in the presence of the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of Sikhism.
The ceremony centers around the “Lavan” — four wedding hymns composed by the fourth Sikh Guru, Guru Ram Das. Each hymn represents a stage in the journey of love and spiritual union.
During each Lavan, the couple walks around the Guru Granth Sahib, symbolizing their commitment to keeping God at the center of their marriage.
The Four Lavans (Rounds)
First Lavan
The couple commits to performing their duties to each other, their families, and to live a righteous life together.
Second Lavan
The couple acknowledges the presence of God in their union and commits to walking the path of truth together.
Third Lavan
The couple feels detachment from worldly desires and finds peace and joy in the company of saints and the divine.
Fourth Lavan
The final round symbolizes the union of two souls becoming one, achieving spiritual harmony and bliss.
